Celebrating our heritage

Whitstable has long been famous for its oysters, and each of our boutique rooms is named after an historic oyster fishing vessel, known as a ‘yawl’ or ‘smack’. All eight vessels were built in Whitstable yards around 1900, including the iconic Gamecock (pictured) which was built at Island Wall in 1907, just yards from another of our pubs, The Smack Inn.

Shepherd Neame is helping to sponsor Whitstable Maritime’s ongoing renovation of the iconic 42-foot boat, which spent its working life dredging oysters in the Swale and is registered as a National Historic Vessel. Boasting a unique design, a similar vessel can be seen on the labels and pump clips of our award-winning Whitstable Bay beer collection. To celebrate this heritage, all guests will be welcomed with a complimentary bottle of Whitstable Bay Pale Ale and Whitstable Bay Organic Ale in their room on arrival.
